All about dyg
Established and run by two garden designers, Anthea Howbert and Tycho (Tig) Mays, dyg provides all of the best elements of a garden centre with the added convenience of nationwide delivery. As designers, their gardens have been featured in numerous publications and, most recently, Tycho has been a judge on the RTE 1 Television Show Super Garden. He has been described as one of Irelands 'top professional garden designers' and is a full member of the Garden and Landscape Designers' Association (GLDA). They work on a wide range of gardens, from small city and suburban gardens to large projects such as grounds for county council offices, community centres and sports clubs. A recent project for Dublin Docklands Development Authority, with O'Donnell and Tuomey architects, was described in the Sunday Times as 'what must be the most beautiful [gardens] of any public building in Ireland'. Where are we based? We are based near Ashford in Co Wicklow. Our trading address is
Stream House, Ballycullen, Ashford, Co Wicklow. Should you wish to contact us by phone, our number is 0404 42806. Contact us via email.
Can we be visited by the public? Unfortunately not. dyg is not set up for visits by customers as we don't have the facilities such as extra parking, toilets, disabled access and so on. Furthermore, as we get in plants to order, we don't keep our huge range of plants in stock. However, people can arrange to drop in to collect an item, and this is sometimes convenient if they live in the locality orhave ordered in something which cannot be delivered by us.
Are the plants high of a high quality and good size? Our plants are grown by the many of the same growers who supply garden centres all over Ireland. Most nurseries have certain specialities (eg trees, acid-loving plants, fruit, herbs and so on), and we are buying from all of these nurseries. We have been dealing with these nurseries for years and are completely satisfied with the quality of everything we sell. Our plants are ordered in when you order, so they are in excellent condition. Wherever possible, we give the container size. Most perennials are in 2 litre containers; most shrubs are in 2-5 L itre containers; most bamboos are in 7-15 litre containers; most trees are in 10 - 12 L containers. These sizes are indicative - please see individual plant listing for details. Occasionally, plants are in smaller containers than those listed, in which case we may supply a greater number than ordered to make up the difference.
Where do we get our plants from? We have been buying plants from wholesale nurseries in Ireland for years, and with dyg, we continue to buy from the same sources. The vast majority of our plants are Irish grown. Some of the nurseries produce plants on a large scale, and some are 'cottage industries' who grow plants specially for us. In all cases, the plants are absolutely top quality. Irish-grown plants are superior to imported ones because they are already acclimatised to the vagaries of our weather, support skilled Irish jobs and have the least 'plant miles' behind them. In some cases, where Irish grown plants are not available, we do sell imported plants.
What do we sell? We sell the plants that we know and love, and have used in our designs over many years. All of the plants are plants which we know can grow very successfully in this climate, and many of the photos of the plants on this website are of plants growing in 'real' gardens in Ireland. The plants that we sell are standard garden centre sizes, and we give the container size. Our current plant list is several hundred species long - and we are always adding to it. We also sell very high quality gardening tools, pots, composts and containers. We would love to hear from you if there is something you feel we should be selling!
Are we competitively priced? Yes we are. Compared like for like (that is, if you can find anything of comparable quality), you will find that our prices are exceptionally competitive. We don't have expensive premises to maintain or sales staff to employ (just the cost of keeping the website up and running), so we can sell our plants cheaper. Our delivery charge is very low, and it doesn't increase with the size of your order, meaning that we will get you whatever you want, in Kerry or Donegal, for €15.00. And many items are delivered free of charge, such as hand tools which can be sent in the post.
How does dyg work? When you place an order with us, we assemble the plants from a range of different growers around the country. We receive deliveries weekly from numerous nurseries, ensuring that any plant you order will be absolutely 'fresh' from the nursery and in tip-top condition. Before we deliver plants to you, we water them and protect them for transportation.
How do we deliver? Depending on the size of the order and the address it's going to, we either deliver
ourselves or we use a courier. For smaller orders such as tools we use the post / courier, and there is no charge for this; for smaller plant orders which are far away from our base in Wicklow, we may use a courier; and for larger orders where a courier would be very expensive, we deliver ourselves. Our 'up-front' delivery rates means that there are no hidden extras when you get to the checkout.
