John Innes composts are soil and grit-based composts, ideal for re-potting of mature vegetables, foliage plants, trees and shrubs. The number refers to the nutrient content, and Number 2 is a general mix suitable for most purposes. John Innes composts are heavier than non-loan-based composts, dry out less and retain nutrients longer than ordinary peat-based composts.  Not suitable for lime-hating (ericaceous) plants. 25 L

We call this stuff 'rocket fuel', and have used it as a general fertiliser for several years. Scattered thinly over beds once or twice a year, it keeps plants and soil healthy. It's also perfect for top-dressing pots and keeping plants in containers in tip-top condition - simply work a small handful into the top inch of the compost. It's a well-balanced fertiliser which encourages leaf and flower development, and is particularly beneficial at the time of planting.
