Dyg's native hedgerow mix

Mixed species
Dyg's native hedgerow mix

The ideal way to plant a hedge which supports a variety of species of birds and other creatures is to plant our mix of native  hedgerow plants. Hedgerows form valuable wildlife corridors throughout our countryside. Our mix has the correct balance of deciduous and evergreen native species, and will thrive in the harshest of environments. We recommend that you plant approximately six plants per linear metre, and our hedge is sold per 10 metres. Plant them in random order in two staggered rows approximately 30 - 40 cms apart. Space the plants in their rows approximately 30 - 35 cms apart. When planting these bare-root plants (except for the Holly, which are container grown) cut a T shaped incision in the ground. With your spade in the top part of the T, lever open the vertical slit. Slide the bare root plant into this, making sure the roots are covered, and holding it firmly so that it is upright. Be sure that it is not planted too deep. If you have any leaves or straw, use these as a mulch. You can also give the plants a trim - don't be nervous about cutting them back. This will encourage them to be bushier and will ultimately lead to them being stronger, denser plants. Values per ten metre stretch / 60 plants: 20 Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn), 10 Ilex aquifolium (Holly) 1-2 L container, 10 Euonymus europaeus (Spindle), 10 Viburnum opulus (Guelder rose) and 10 Rosa canina (Dog rose). All plants are 2 year old bare root whips except for Ilex/ Holly which perform much better when container grown.
