Loquat, Japanese plum

Eriobotrya japonica
Loquat, Japanese plum

Loquats are small, evergreen trees or large shrubs, whose large leaves lend a tropical air to any garden - much prized in this country for their 'architectural' qualities. If planted in a warm, sheltered spot (such as against a south facing wall), they produce powerfully exotic scented flowers in autumn and edible fruits in April or May, with succulent, tangy flesh which is varies between sweet to mildly acid, depending on ripeness. These fruits are popular throughout southern Europe and many parts of West Coast America and Asia. They like to be near to the sea, but require a warm sheltered spot if you want fruit - which may only happen after a warmer, drier summer. 2.5 - 3 litre container. Larger sizes up to 2 metres available on request
