Sweet chestnut, Spanish chestnut
A large and handsome deciduous tree, grown for its edible nuts (chestnuts) as well as its attractive and useful timber. It produces edible and tasty nuts in warmer summers - best roasted or with brussel sprouts. With an ultimate height of between 20-35m, this is a tree for large gardens, estates or parklands. Prefers slightly acid and well-drained but moist soil. It has long, serrated leaves and is a very attractive tree. Bare root plants 60-90 cms tall. November to March only.
