This decorative gravel, traditionally known as drainage pebble, was traditionally used around drainage pipes where it allowed good water permeability. It makes a handsome pebble or gravel for gardens, and is used for parking areas or small paths. Because it is large (200 mm average size) it tends to stay in the same place, and we have used it as a decorative gravel in some city gardens..... full of natural colours and textures, and especially attractive when wet. €30 delivery charge, applicable once on any order containing bulky items such as this. Beach pebble - a traditional garden gravel. From an ecological point of view, gravel drains well and allows water to permeate all parts of the soil, reducing water run-off and flash floods. It is relatively inexpensive per square metre - compared, say, to cobble-lock or paving, and is fast to install. This beach pebble is excellent for paths, walkways and driveways and has a subtle variation of colours and textures. Ideal for refreshing or topping up existing gravel areas. 1 ton of gravel covers 18 - 20 sq metres to a depth of 2.5cms. Gravel is laid over a base of compacted 'dust' or 'blinding grit'. This is a very fine version of the gravel which, when compacted, forms a hard layer. It is comprised of tiny pieces of stone of various sizes which compacts to form a solid layer. The blinding should be similar to the upper gravel so that scuffs and worn areas do not stand out. Use a vibrating plate or 'whacker' to do this, or attach a heavy board to a rake head. This layer of blinding should be applied over a weed barrier or a base of compacted rubble. It should be layed a minimum 2.5 cms deep / 1 inch. 1 ton will cover approximately 25 - 30 square metres to this depth. A deservedly popular gravel from the Leitrim / Roscommon area, this angular, pale golden / fawn coloured gravel is extremely popular for parking areas because of its jagged shape, which beds down particularly solidly. We have used it in several gardens, where it has a subtle presence which blends well with both modern and period architecture. Occasional raking with a landscape rake will keep it looking particularly fresh and attractive. The gravel will have some dust on it upon delivery. This is entirely natural and will wash off in the first rain. In our opinion, the most attractive of all gravels. This wonderful gravel is used in many of Wicklow's finest gardens, including Powerscourt and Mount Usher, and we have used it with great success in many of the gardens we have designed. It is made from relatively soft, iron-rich granite, so is imbued with ochres and rusts as well as the glistening sliver and mica. It makes excellent pathways and compacts down to a dust. If used as a parking area it requires topping-up every couple of years as it does crumble under pressure. Using a local material such as this has many benefits, and roots a house very well in its surroundings. Also available in different sizes: extra fine / dust or 14-18 mm.
