Quite simply, the best boards for raised beds - solid 2 inch thick Irish oak. Longer-lasting and better looking than any softwood, free from all preservatives and chemicals, locally-grown and excellent value - they require no tratment. By raising your beds, you gain control of the soil, and it is also much easier to do the gardening: there is less bending down, no edges to maintain and fewer slugs and snails. These are the best possible boards for raised vegetable beds. They are heavy and very strong: you will need a good saw or a chainsaw to cut them, and holes for fixing will need to be drilled. Depending on the soil below, they can be either one board or 2 boards high. You only need to go one board high if you have reasonable soil below and two boards if you are putting them on a non-cultivatable surface. Note, boards are freshly sawn and will contract as they dry. Three boards will be sufficient for a low raised bed approx 3 m long x 1.5 m wide x 20 cms high. Six boards will be sufficient for the same dimensions but twice as high. You will also need 8 oak pegs as fixings in each corner and along each side. If you need soil, we suggest using our special vegetable bed mix.

You need these stakes if you are making a raised bed with our oak boards. They should be driven into each corner and the boards screwed into them with 3 and a half inch decking screws. For a bed using three boards you will need eight stakes: one in each corner and two along each side.

A soaker hose is the most best way of watering precious new plants. Sometimes plants need a bit of extra T.L.C. to get established, and there is no better way than bringing water straight to their roots. A soaker hose is basically a flexible porous pipe which leaks very small amounts of water along its length. It can be connected to a normal hose and snake its way around the base of plants. Particularly suited for the establishment of hedges such as bay, or for areas with a 'rain shadow' such as near tall buildings or under mature trees. For best results it should be lightly covered in bark mulch. Remember that plants can also get too much water, and it should be used only when necessary. The ultimate base for a roll-out lawn, this mix of 30% screened topsoil and 70% fine sand is ideal for getting a level base for a roll-out lawn. It improves drainage and enables lawns to be laid over soil which is wet or waterlogged and leads to a healthier, more resilient lawn. Nothing could be simpler if you require quality screened topsoil for your garden. Having it in a one ton bag means it can be cleanly and quickly delivered to your home. It can be left on a pavement or parking area without creating a mess. Screened topsoil means that stones and roots larger than 2.5 cms have been removed via a screening mechanism, and you won't have large clods to break up or other debris to remove. We cannot guarantee however that it is totally weed or root free. It has been stored under cover and is therefore dry or dusty when delivered. Decorative and useful mulch for beds and paths. This broken slate ('plum' coloured) is a very stylish alternative to gravel or loose cobbles. It can be used as a mulch in gravel gardens, as a top-dressing in pots, or at the base of 'architectural' plantings schemes. Suitable for areas of light traffic such as footpaths, but not for vehicular traffic. 1 ton can cover approximately 15-20 sq metres to a depth of 5 cms / 2 inches. These 'sleepers' are made from wood which has been treated with Tanalith E, a wood preservative which is non-toxic and safe for use in family gardens. Ideal for raised beds or retaining walls. They are approximately 2.4 metres long (7 foot ten inches) x  20 cms x 10 cms (8 inch x 4 inch). Delivery charge is €30.00, applicable once on any order which includes bulky items such as this. Railway sleepers have long been very useful in the garden, from making steps to retaining beds, paths and banks. They are economical and long-lasting. Our sleepers are made from German stock of hardwood / oak. They are 8.5 feet long (260 cms), 6 inch x 9 inch. Please note: they should on no account be used for raised vegetable beds, in children's play areas or as benches or indeed in any area where they will be handled; the creosote which preserves them is known to be toxic. Gloves should be worn during the cutting and construction process. Delivery charge of €30.00, applicable once on any order which contains bulky products such as these.

Autumn is the best time to top-dress your lawn with sand. For anyone wanting that 'perfect lawn', top-dressing with sand is part of the process. This washed sharp golden sand from Wexford is typically used on golf courses or sports pitches as well as for equestrian tracks. It should be evenly spread and worked into the grass to a depth of a quarter to half an inch. The turf should be cut hard and ideally aerated before the top dressing is applied - grass clipping should also be removed. After the sand is applied, the turf should be raked to pull the sand from any high areas and spread into any low areas. Top-dressing with sand is most suitable for lawns with heavy, compacted or clay soils. In areas with sandy soil a rootzone mix should be used instead, which incorporates some organic matter in the form of screened topsoil. One ton bag.
