The arboretum 1: small to medium-sized trees

Worthy of a botanic garden! A collection of beautiful trees, designed to bring colour, flowers and interesting form to a medium-sized to large garden, or to plant into an existing woodland. This collection could also be planted with larger trees, such as those in our large tree collection, and makes up a most interesting and tasteful collection of small to medium-sized trees. The year kicks off with the pink flowers of the Cercis 'Forest Pansy' and the large, nodding white flowers of Prunus 'Shirotae'. The Amelanchier 'Ballerina' also flowers early in the year, with a very cheery display of small white flowers, soon followed by the large pale pink 'cup and saucer' flowers of the Magnolia soulangeana. Later in the year it's up to foliage, from the very sunny, bright leaves of the Robinia to the wonderfully intricate leaves and mounded form of the Acer palmatum 'Dissectum'. We have also added in the classic, white-stemmed Himalayan birch (Betula 'Jacquemontii') and the unusual, very special Snakebark maple (Acer davidii), which has a most attractive, glossy, snake-like bark. Sorbus 'Pink Pagoda' has pretty, pale pink, almost metallic berries in autumn and on into the winter. The Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum) has a wonderful, subtle scent of burnt sugar in autumn. Many of these plants, such as the Amelanchier, Birch, Robinia and Sorbus can be planted very near to a house without causing damage to pipes or foundations, and will never grow to steal all the light - be brave, and plant them near the house. Sold as sturdy, half-standard sized plants in  7.5 L - 12 L containers.

Planting and maintenance:

A collection of trees this size requires sufficient space, and would be suitable for a medium-sized garden upwards. Unusual or special trees such as these should be planted near a house or in a 'garden' setting - they are not suitable for hedgrows, along boundaries (except in suburban areas) or exposed sites. Ideally, these trees would be planted in moist to well-drained soil in sun or light shade, and require a degree of shelter from very strong winds or sea conditions. Planted together, they should be arranged informally along a path or in a relaxed grove with at least 5 m between each plant. If planted around a newly built house, ensure that soil is level, free from contaminants such as paint, cement etc. In a new garden which is very open, it may also be necessary to make some sort of a wind break. Groundcover plants, small shrubs, ferns or grass can be planted underneath, but if planted in grass, ensure that each tree has an adequate grass-free area at the base to minimise mower and strimmer damage. The Prunus 'Shirotae' is a spreading tree, and should have at least four metres on all sides to allow it room to spread. The Cercidiphyllum is also a larger tree which requires a similar amount of space. Detailed instuctions on how to plant a tree...
