The Jungle Look: big bold and exotic

This is a very special collection of rare and unusual plants that we have used and loved in two or three city centre gardens, where a small space has been brought to life with an array of striking stems, blossoms and leaves. It's important that it was in the city: these plants need shelter, most often found in back gardens with walls or fences around them. The stunning canes of the two bamboo species are juxtaposed with the giant leaves of Tetrapanax 'Rex', and splashes of red from the Tropaeolum, Crocosmia and Lobelia give it a tropical, exotic look. There are some more subtle plants in the mix, to act as foils for the bolder ones, such as the silver-leaved Astelia and feathery plumes of the grass, Chionochloa. Cordyline indivisa is another highly unusual and very exotic woody plant that will add to the jungle atmosphere as it matures. This is a planting scheme for the more daring gardener, who is willing to give a bit of tender loving care to these plants.

Planting and maintenance:

Many of these plants are what as known as 'heavy feeders', and most require fertile, well-drained and deep soil. Ideally, the soil should be well prepared by adding some well-rotted manure or home-made garden compost. Most of the plants also need some shelter from strong winds and heavy frosts. Watering regularly throughout their first year will ensure their survival. Ideally, these plants will be grouped together in two or three beds, knitting together as they mature. Many of them, such as the Phyllostachys and Tetrapanax, will double in size after a couple of years, so space these two far apart from each other. The lower plants such as the perennials and grasses can form a matrix at ground level, and should be planted at 2 to 3 plants per square metre. Fertilising once a year with manure or compost will be a great benefit.

All planting schemes come with a planting list, planting instructions and maintenance advice.
