Seaside perennials - I do like to be beside the seaside

Plants growing near the sea have to be able to withstand strong, salt-laden winds. On the other hand, there is less frost, so gardeners can ‘push the boundaries’ of what can be grown in this climate by planting near the sea. This collection of plants is suitable for fairly well-drained soil and a bright spot. It offers a variety of colours, flowers and foliage types throughout the seasons, and could be used in combination with our ‘Seaside Shrubs’ planting scheme. Most of these plants don't need to be planted right beside the sea, but they should be within a mile or two of it as some of them (eg Aeonium) are tender, which means they will die in a heavy, inland frost. The scheme comprises thirty plants, and if planted in a bed covers approximately six square metres. Alternatively, add the collection into your existing garden. Read more on seaside planting...

Planting and maintenance:

This scheme is not designed for waterlogged or heavy soil, but rather for well-drained reasonably shallow and even poor soil. Once planted, however, plants near the sea can dry out very quickly, and should be regularly watered, especially if planted on a slope or during a dry spell. Many of the plants will set seed, and therefore move from place to place as the garden matures. This is particularly true for Verbena bonariensis, Erigeron karvinskianus and Armeria maritima, so you you may end up getting more of these plants than you would bargained for! If this is the case, weed out young seedlings from wherever you don’t want them, and let them grow in any patches you want filled. Cutting down plant stems after flowering will prevent seeds from forming and will also encourage plants to send out more blooms. Ideally, these plants should be mulched with gravel, manure or garden compost to keep them in good health.

All planting schemes come with a planting list, planting instructions and maintenance advice.
