Seaside mix: flowering shrubs

The seaside is a hostile environment for many plants. Strong winds and salty air can kill many a hardy plant, and only carefully chosen plants will thrive or survive in such an environment. By and large, these plants have some tolerance to drought, as sea air can be very drying. Larger plants such as these can provide much-needed shelter, and also add colour and form throughout the year. These plants, most with thick or tough leaves, are predominantly evergreen. Suitable for any garden with enough space for up to ten shrubs / small trees, well-drained to moist soil and reasonable amounts of light.  Read more on seaside planting...

Planting and maintenance:

The most critical time for plants by the sea is March and April, when cold easterly winds can strip them of their leaves and weaken them to the point of death. Be prepared for a bit of die-back at this time of year, which can be pruned out later on. Ensure plants are well watered before planting, and firmly planted to avoid rocking in the wind. Watering through dry periods is essential, especially in the first year. Hydrangeas should have their old flowers trimmed off in early spring. The other plants can be left much to their own devices, although some such as Fuchsia can be cut back hard in early spring to encourage denser growth.
