The shady garden: flowers and ferns

Planting and maintenance:
Ideally, this collection of plants should be planted in light or dappled shade, under or near trees. It will not thrive in very heavy shade or dry, impoverished soil. Once planted, water well while establishing. At the end of the year, spread a layer of rotten leaves (leaf-mould), well-rotted manure or home-made compost over the soil, and cut down to the ground any wilted or dead-looking foliage. Weeds should be kept under control, but some of these plants will spread by self-seeding, such as Corydalis and Digitalis, so care should be taken not to weed out those you may want to keep.
All planting schemes come with a planting list, planting instructions and maintenance advice.
