Summer flowers: cool colours

Planting and maintenance:
Ensure that plants are well-watered before planting. Plant in a sunny spot on well-drained soil free from weeds. Space plants approximately five plants per sq m in a random manner, in groups of two to three, with Stipa 'Ponytails' evenly distributed between the groupings. Keep well weeded. Dead-heading (ie trimming off old flowers) will encourage a longer season of bloom. Some of these plants (especially Stipa) do spread from place to place, and this can be encouraged (or discouraged) according to your tastes. In Autumn, when plants begin to die back and go dormant for the winter, dead foliage can be cut back to two or three inches above ground level, taking care not to damage the base of the plant or 'crown'. During the winter period, a dressing of well-rotted manure or home-made garden compost can be added between the plants to add nutrients, prevent weeds and improve soil structure.
We may make small alterations to this scheme depending on the availability of plants at different times of the year.
