Wet feet

Some plants just like to have wet feet! The plants in this collection aren't aquatic plants - they are plants which like wet or waterlogged soil, and some of them can even stand in shallow water. Most of these plants could be described as low maintenance, if sited correctly, as they don't need watering. If you have a damp area in the garden, a pond or a stream bank, these plants are ideal to go at its edge. We start the year with cheery yellow flowers of the Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris), followed by the classic yellow flag iris- we love the variegated one, whose leaves are subtly veined with creamy white edges. Other plants include the very large-leafed and dramatic Rodgersia aesculifolia (pink flowers); the feathery rose-pink plumes of Astilbe and spires of Lythrum. We have also included the supremely elegant Arum lily (Zantedeschia), which is a favoutite in Irish garden and thrives in wet boggy soil, or even standing in a few inches of water. Two species of Primula have brightly coloured spires of flower in early summer, and should be planted together in little clusters. Trees and shrubs that grow well near this scheme (ie in damp soil) include most bamboos, alders, willows, Liquidambar, Taxodium and tree ferns.

Planting and maintenance:

Once you have removed the plants from their pots, plant at the edge of your pond, or in your damp site. Iris, Lythrum, Zantedeschia and Caltha can all be planted with their crowns submerged in the water, if desired, but not more than six inches below the surface. The others will need to be out of the water, but will tolerate heavy, boggy soil. As with many perennials, chop down to ground level at the end of the year when all foliage has died down. A top-dressing of organic matter such as well-rotted manure or garden compost will keep down weeds and encourage plants to fill in well.

All planting schemes come with a planting list, planting instructions and maintenance advice.
