The arboretum 2: large and noble trees
Planting and maintenance:
These trees should be planted out of extreme winds, and require moderately fertile and well-drained soils. If you want to create a small woodland, plant them informally with at least 8 - 10 metres between each specimen. You could then inter-plant this area with smaller trees, flowering shrubs or a collection of groundcover plants. An ideal, naturalistic planting has plants of all sizes planted together, from the vary large to the very small. Generally speaking, these trees benefit from some degree of shelter, and require soil that is fertile and moderately well-drained. They are not suited as a shelter belt (choose fast-growing native species such as Alder or Pine for this), but for specimens within a garden, or planted in a grove to form a small woodland.
