Best scented plants for Irish gardens

Bringing scent to your garden can add a whole new dimension to it, and there are some fabulously fragrant plants which grow easily and well in most Irish gardens. We have made a selection of shrubs which will bring delicious fragrances to your garden at different times the year. Some of them are very showy whilst others have smaller flowers, making their presence felt more by their fragrance than their looks. This collection of plants would suit most gardens except the very smallest, and would require fertile, well-drained soil and a degree of shelter. It's a good idea to place fragrant plants near to places where you pass frequently or near a window or door. By clicking on the 'See all plants in the collection' button below you can learn about  the requirements of each individual plant. Generally, there is a prevalence of scented plants in the winter months, but we have brought together plants which will bring fragrance to your garden in winter, spring summer and autumn.

Planting and maintenance:

Plant in well-drained but not overly-dry fertile soil, and mulch or top-dress your soil with fine-grade bark mulch or Gee-up soil improver. The Daphne and the Sweet box (Sarcococca) can both be planted in light or dappled shade and are best out full sun or exposed places. Near a wall which may offer some shelter is a good spot. The Lilac (Syringa) Shrub rose (Rosa rugosa 'Donation') and Mock orange (Philadelphus) should be in a sunny spot and are undemanding of shelter or special soil types. Both can be pruned as they mature, if required, to keep them to a desired size. The Rhododendron 'Alice Fitzwilliam' is probably the most particular of the plants in this collection, but it simply had to be included....... its sweet, clove and coconut fragrance has to be sampled to be believed. It requires a sheltered position, protected from severe frosts (though it has survived outside our house in Wicklow for years) and if you don't have acidic soil we suggest planting it in a container in Ericaceous compost (where it will be happy for many years).
