Planting and maintenance:
Plant in well-drained but not overly-dry fertile soil, and mulch or top-dress your soil with fine-grade bark mulch or Gee-up soil improver. The Daphne and the Sweet box (Sarcococca) can both be planted in light or dappled shade and are best out full sun or exposed places. Near a wall which may offer some shelter is a good spot. The Lilac (Syringa) Shrub rose (Rosa rugosa 'Donation') and Mock orange (Philadelphus) should be in a sunny spot and are undemanding of shelter or special soil types. Both can be pruned as they mature, if required, to keep them to a desired size. The Rhododendron 'Alice Fitzwilliam' is probably the most particular of the plants in this collection, but it simply had to be included....... its sweet, clove and coconut fragrance has to be sampled to be believed. It requires a sheltered position, protected from severe frosts (though it has survived outside our house in Wicklow for years) and if you don't have acidic soil we suggest planting it in a container in Ericaceous compost (where it will be happy for many years).
Plants in this scheme:
| Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postil' | Sarcococca confusa |
| Philadelphus lemoinei | Rosa rugosa 'Donation' |
| Syringa vulgaris 'Charles Joly' | Rhododendron 'Alice Fitzwilliam' |
