Bowers of flowers

This is a collection of old-fashioned, flowering garden shrubs, suitable for many soils and environments. It is not so much a planting scheme as a collection of plants which can be added into an existing garden or create the framework for a new garden. They all have interesting flowers, adding height and texture to your garden, and splashes of colour or scent throughout the year. They would grow extremely well dotted in between larger trees such as those in either of our 'Arboretum' schemes, or as a backdrop to many of our perennial planting schemes. Shrubs are a low-maintenance, high impact and great value way of bringing colour, structure and scent into the garden. The two magnolias bloom early, before the leaves appear, one pink, one white, and the 'Leonard Messel' deliciously scented. Two other early bloomers are Philadelphus and Exochorda 'The Bride'. Both have a profusion of beautiful white flowers, and the Philadelphus is deliciously scented. Hydrangea 'Annabelle' is one of the prettiest, cream-frowering Hydrangeas, while our lilac has arching, dark pink or purple sprays full of the scent of summer. The winter is also taken care of in this scheme, with two winter-flowering shrubs, Mahonia 'Charity' and Viburnum 'Charles Lamont' - both heavily scented, and in bloom in the dead of winter.

Planting and maintenance:

These plants should be well-watered before planting. When planting, loosen the roots and plant into well-dug holes, wider than they are deep. Take care not to plant too deep. After planting, mulch with bark, manure, or garden compost. If planting in a grassy area, keep grass and weeds away from the base - consider using one of our biodegradable weed mats to help with this. If planted en masse, allow suficient space between each plant - at least three to four metres. As this will make them look a little lost for the few years in which it takes them to fill in, consider planting a groundcover such as perriwinkle (Vinca minor), native grasses or ferns. Alternatively, these shrubs would be able to be dotted throughout an existing garden, in areas of light shade or around the boundary of a garden. Most of these plants should not be pruned, and definitely not 'trimmed' or shaped. See individual plant descriptions.
