The Herb Garden: small is beautiful

Planting and maintenance:
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Make sure the soil is free of weeds and roots, otherwise these will grow up and get tangled up in your plants. Herbs don't like to be waterlogged or damp, and they are content to grow in less fertile conditions than many plants. However, care should be taken that they don't dry out, especially in the first few weeks when they are establishing. Idealy, the soil should be top-dressed with gravel or grit after planting, which prevents water from spalshing onto the underside of the leaves. It also retains heat from the sun and leads to better growing conditions. Harvest regularly, and cover, and trim back fennel, chives, sage and oregano at the end of the year. Sold in smaller 9 cms - 1L containers.
