| Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana'
Barberry
One of the easiest and most successful shrubs for small hedges, this dwarf barberry has dark purple leaves and grows well in many conditions, making it an ideal 'low maintenance' plant. The photo shows it used in the best possible way - in a knot garden, with Santolina and English lavender in Filoli Gardens near San Fransisco in California. Orange flowers in spring. Trim in late summer or autumn if you want it clipped. Ideal for the smaller garden. 3L container.

| Buxus sempervirens (bare-root bundles of ten)
Box hedge, Boxwod, Box (bare-root bundles of ten)
The classic and best formal hedge, traditionally used for lining paths or dividing beds in a 'parterre' garden. These bare-root plants are larger, more vigorous and at least half the price of box plants in containers at other times of the year. They are also fast and easy to plant. Use 4 - 5 plants per linear metre to form a hedge, or 6 plants per metre in 2 staggered rows to form a wider hedge, as illustrated here. Plant into well-dug, fertile soil, and mulch with bark or manure to keep roots moist and soil protected. Clip twice annually (midsummer and autumn) if you like things very tidy. Clip once (late summer) if you prefer a looser look. Price is per bundle of 10 bushy bare-root plants, 40-50 cms in height. Sold November to April only.

It can be kept clipped if necessary. Plant in sun or light shade, in moist, fertile soil, away from very strong winds. | Festuca glauca
Blue fescue grass
A compact, neat-growing blue-green grass which is popular as an edging plant, in rockeries, gravel gardens or in any well-drained soil. Ideal in a 'low-maintenance' garden as it stays compact, requires nest-to-no watering and needs little care other than a light trim at the end of the year. They also make a most stylish plant for a terracotta pot - remember to keep watered when establishing. They have short flower stalks up to about 30 cms in summer. These plants require a sunny spot and well-drained soil. For best results, mulch around the plants with gravel. As a border or ground cover, space plants approximately 20 cms apart. 2 litre container.

It grows best in well-drained soil and sun, and is a traditional favourite in the rockery. It can also grow along walls or in gaps between steps. Masses of white flowers in spring and summer make this a great value plant requiring little care. 2L container.
