Daphne odora
Winter-flowering daphne

As the name suggets, Daphne odora is one of the most fragrant daphnes - plant near a door or gate so you will pass it regularly. Daphnes are increasingly hard to find, making them a very special garden plant. They grow best in shade or dappled sunlight and prefer some shelter from cold winds, especially those from the east. It is an upright, branching shrub with handsome evergreen leaves. The tubular pink flowers are small and deliciously fragrant, arranged in clusters at the shoot tips, and appearing early in the year in late winter - making it a seasonally-correct Christmas gift.  Plant in moist to well-drained soil in light or dappled shade. Add leaf-mould or compost to the soil to help the plants establish. Pruning not recommended. 2 litre container.

Philadelphus 'Manteau d'Hermine'
'Manteau d'Hermine' Mock orange

A compact and beautiful double-flowered Mock orange - gorgeously scented. 'Manteau d'Hermine'  is perhaps the most popular dwarf philadelphus, heavily scented with the typical orange-blossom fragrance from creamy white flowers. It thrives in most soils, including clay or chalky soils. It forms a low mound up to 150 cms x 150 cms, making it ideal for the smaller garden. Cut back shoot to a strong bud each year after flowering in summer. To rejuvenate older plants, remove roughly a third of the oldest branches each year to encourage new growth. 2-3 litre.

Rhododendron 'Lady Alice Fitzwilliam'
'Lady Alice Fitzwilliam' rhododendron

Ireland's most fragrant plant? This has to be one of them. This rarely available Rhododendron has exceptionally strongly perfumed white flowers in late spring and early summer, opening from pink buds - it is one of our best-selling plants. The intoxicating scent fills the entire surrounding area and is uniquely lovely - every garden should have at least one! We have had one near our front door for three years, and look forward to it blooming each year. Plant in a sheltered spot or in a container (in ericaceous compost). Also suitable for an unheated conservatory. Very hardy - ours is healthy and well after temperatures of -10c over the last winters. Attractive leaves have a downy underside. Height and spread 2 x 2 m. A very choice plant for the late Spring garden. Grown in Mount Congreve Estate in Co Waterford. Sold in a 2 litre pot.

Rosa 'Madame Alfred Carriere'
'Madame Alfred Carriere' noisette / climbing rose

This is an old fashioned noisette rose (climbing) dating from 1879. It has beautiful, pale pink to white, double flowers that are deliciously scented. The stems are slender and almost thornless, and the foliage is a pale green. Repeat flowering - first in early summer and again in late summer. It is an ideal and beautiful rose for the front wall of the house, where you can enjoy the fragrance every time you go in or out the front door. For the first two years after planting, only cut out dead, diseased and damaged wood and tie stems onto horizontal wire supports. After that, prune the main shoots to fit the area, and reduce sideshoots to three or four buds. Ultimate height: up to 5 metres. Ensure that the 'bud union' (the bulge at the base of the shoots) is planted 2.5cm (1in) below the soil. As roses are field grown and potted up in winter, do not be surprised if compost falls away when planting  - this is completely as it should be!

Rosa 'Madame Gregoire Staechelin'
Spanish Beauty / 'Madame Gregoire Staechelin' climbing rose

This is a tall and vigorous climbing rose with very large, fragrant pink flowers. Long and elegant buds open to semi-double flowers, that are five inches or more across and of clearest glowing pink with a delicious sweet-pea fragrance. Large clusters of bloom hang from its branches in billowing masses, making it particularly attractive when seen from below. A truly magnificent climber, flowering once only in the season. Plant in sun or partial shade in fertile soil. Ultimate height: 6-7 metres. Ensure that the 'bud union' (the bulge at the base of the shoots) is planted 2.5cm (1in) below the soil. As roses are field grown and potted up in winter, do not be surprised if compost falls away when planting  - this is completely as it should be!

Rosa rugosa 'Passion'
'Passion' Japanese rose, Hedge rose, Saltspray rose

Rugosa roses are as trouble-free and tough as they are pretty, making them ideal for low-mainenance situations. This variety is particularly compact, dense and free-flowering, making it especially suited for low hedges or the front of a border.  It has a gorgeously fragrant double-blossom. Flowering time is summer, and large berries or hips are produced in the autumn - perfect for jellies and jams, where hips make an excellent thickening agent. Great by the sea in poor or sandy soil. It is much easier and more resisitant to diseases than other roses. Rugosa roses can be cut down to the ground in early spring if they get too big, or cut down one third of shoots each spring to keep the plant healthy - or do nothing! Perhaps the easiest of all roses. See more images.... 3L container.
