Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis’
Golden grove bamboo

A large, clump forming bamboo with attractive yellow canes punctuated with vivid green stripes. Grows best in moist soils, ideally with some shelter from wind, but once established is very resilient. Lower leaves and small stems can be removed at the base, up to any desired height, to expose the attractive stems. As with all bamboos, soil should be moist and fertile, and the addition of garden compost or farmyard manure will help the plant establish. Two sizes are available - the larger size is quite substantial and is ideal for anyone who wants an instant vertical screen that is 400 - 450 cms  in height. This larger plant is excellent value - you won't find it cheaper elsewhere!  Medium: 12- 15L container / 175- 200 cms height. Large: 30L container / 400-450 cms height

Phyllostachys bissettii
Bamboo

An ideal bamboo for a screen or hedge. This trouble-free bamboo has green stems and narrow green leaves. Although vigorous, this plant is clump-forming rather than spreading (ie with underground runners). Therefore, it makes a fine, fast-growing screen or specimen. This bamboo is particularly wind resistant, and leaves show little signs of damage even after cold, drying winds - it also has good tolerance to seaside conditions. We have planted this plant on Strand Road in Sandymount, only metres from the sea, and it has thrived there, unblemished, for many years. As with all bamboo, it requires moisture to establish, but is otherwise trouble-fee. We have planted this as a hedge, approximately 2.5 plant per linear metre, for almost instant cover, as shown in the photo on the right. Canes are initially quite floppy, but will firm up after planting. Can grow to 5 m, but normally attains 3-4 m in this climate. Healthy, Irish-grown plants in an 18L container.

Phyllostachys nigra
Black bamboo

These Irish-grown plants are an excellent size, in super condition and for sale at an unbeatable price. An elegant and stylish bamboo with ebony black stems and narrow  green leaves. Its black stems have made it one of the iconic garden plants, and it grows well in this climate, provided it has some shelter from strong winds - particularly eaterly spring winds. Once established, they tolerate most soils, but require some moisture and benefit from organic matter such as compost. Remember, bamboo do lose their leaves and can look somewhat shabby in spring / early summer. They can grow to 5 m, though they normally attain 2 - 3 m in this climate. Can make a fine screen. All bamboos on dyg are Irish-grown, making them well adapted to our unique weather conditions. Our plants come as specimens between 200 cms and 300cms in height.  See more options for screens and hedges...   Large: 20 litre; Extra large: 35 litre.

Pleioblastus shibuyanus 'Tsuboi'
'Tsuboi' variegated groundcover bamboo

We spotted this plant growinbg in a garden at the National Garden Exhibition Centre in Kilquade in Co Wicklow. Though not normally fans of variegated bamboos, this one has a quite lovely creamy white leaf variegation which makes you wonder.... is the sun shining here? This is a low, spreading, vigorous bamboo which can grow in sun or partial shade, and is an ideal plant if you actively want something to spread and cover the ground. It can grow to 5 or 6 feet in height, but can equally be clipped to any height below this, or even as a low hedge. For best effect, should be planted in small groups of 3-5 plants. It requires soil which is well-drained but moist, and would benefit from the addition of Gee-up of garden compost at the time of planting.  It is also an ideal plant for a container - remember to water well and to change the soil from time to time. 2-3 Litre container

A large-leafed bamboo which makes a good specimen in a pot or enclosed area. It is very resistant to wind, but can be invasive as it spreads by (underground) runners. Best in an area where it cannot spread indefinitely, and if it receives sufficient water and nutrients, it makes a fine container plant. Can grow to 3 - 4m. Requires sufficient water, particularly when first planted and establishing its roots. Most bamboos on dyg are Irish-grown, making them better adapted to our unique weather conditions. 3 litre container.
