Hazel, An Col (Irish), Filbert, Cobnut
|
Corylus avellana
Hazel, An Col (Irish), Filbert, Cobnut
A native shrub or small tree, the hazel has shiny, almost metallic bark, long catkins in spring and large, rounded green leaves which turn bright yellow in autumn. Considered by the Celts to be the plant of knowledge. It produces a crop of edible hazelnuts, and was traditionally coppiced (cut to the ground on a regualr basis) to produce 'rods' or poles, and also for charcoal production. Plant it as an understorey in a woodland or in a hedgerow, in full sun or in shade, in fertile, free-draining soil. It prefers alkaline soil, so not suitable for peaty or boggy areas. 2-3 L container.

Loquat, Japanese plum
|
Eriobotrya japonica
Loquat, Japanese plum
Loquats are small, evergreen trees or large shrubs, whose large leaves lend a tropical air to any garden - much prized in this country for their 'architectural' qualities. If planted in a warm, sheltered spot (such as against a south facing wall), they produce powerfully exotic scented flowers in autumn and edible fruits in April or May, with succulent, tangy flesh which is varies between sweet to mildly acid, depending on ripeness. These fruits are popular throughout southern Europe and many parts of West Coast America and Asia. They like to be near to the sea, but require a warm sheltered spot if you want fruit - which may only happen after a warmer, drier summer. 2.5 - 3 litre container. Larger sizes up to 2 metres available on request

Fig 'Brown Turkey'
|
Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey'
Fig 'Brown Turkey'
Eating figs ripe from the plant are one of life's great pleasures and Ficus 'Brown Turkey' is the best choice for experiencing that pleasure here in Ireland. The fruits ripen in late August and are best picked once they begin to droop on the stalk. They should be grown in a sheltered spot in full sun. Training them against a south facing wall in a fan-like arrangement works very well. Figs should always have their roots constricted in order to encourage better fruiting. 3L container.
