Whitecurrants are both beautiful and although somewhat tart they have a delicate and unusual flavour. They make a lovely addition to pies and jellies or just as decoration around the edges of a cake or cheese board. The berries can be picked by the "cluster" rather than individually and should be picked on a dry day. Currants are very easy to grow, and require little in the way of pruning. A traditional and native rose with delicately scented pink flowers in mid summer and red hips in the autumn - and sharp thorns year round! Plant with a mix of other hedgerow species such as Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Elder. Flowers appeal to bees and butterflies, while the hips can be eaten by birds or used by us in jellys and preserves.
