Acacia pravissima
Oven's wattle

A small tree or large shrub with extraordinary foliage and yellow pom-pomflowers! Acacia pravissima is a good tree for a small, sheltered garden, as it has gorgeous, scented pom-pom like flowers in spring, extremely unusual triangular leaves and remains relatively compact. Acacias prefer well-drained or even dry soils, are great near the sea and require little care. As this one is fairly compact, it is less likely to blow over than some other larger Acacia species. It may be trimmed or pruned to maintain at desired size. 5L container.

Cercidiphyllum japonicum
Katsura tree

Fabulous autumn colour and scent. A beautiful, medium-sized deciduous tree with small, heart-shaped leaves which start the year green but turn a glorious shade of reddish orange in autumn. At this time, they give off a faint but definite smell of candyfloss or burnt sugar. Best in sun or light shade, in moist, slightly acidic soil. A rounded tree which normally has many stems, it can grow to 20m x 10. We have one planted right outside our house - the smell, though faint, makes it a very special tree. 10L  container.

Corylus avellana 'Contorta'
Contorted hazel, Corkscrew hazel, Harry Lauder's walking stick

A most unusual plant, with curly ornamental stems - much loved by flower arrangers. This variant of our native hazelnut has wonderfully contorted stems which are at their most visible during the winter when there are no leaves on the plant. It prefers light shade and well-drained soil - ideal at a woodland edge. It should be planted away from other shrubs so that its unusual form can best appreciated, surrounded by lower ground-cover plants. It can reach 3-4 metres, but is slow growing. Its size can be kept in check by removing older stems from the base - this will ensure that it has a steady supply of its prized stems, and makes it a suitable candidate for the small to medium-sized garden. Gorgeous catkins in spring and lush green leaves in summer, turning yellow in autumn. Only rarely produces nuts.  Bushy plant in a 10 litre container.

Dicksonia antarcticta
Dicksonia - soft tree fern

This fern grows like a tree, with enormous fronds coming from a woody trunk. It makes a very impressive specimen, and can be bought inexpensively as a younger plant. The younger plants that we sell establish quickly and are hardier and more resilient than imported mature plants.Ideal for a woodland garden or in a sheltered, shady or partially sunny spot. They are hardy, but do not appreciate cold drying winds. Cut back old fronds in late spring, and water the stem as well as the trunk. Ideally, keep the stem and foliage moist, in particular while they get established. They grow exceptionally wellin a container.  Tree ferns are native to Tasmania, but can grow very well in this climate, and even naturalise, as in at Dereen Garden in Kerry, where this picture was taken. Larger sizes available - please contact us....See images oflarger specimens.  7 litre container.

Ginkgo biloba
Ginkgo, Maidenhair tree, 銀杏, yín xìng (Chinese)

A rare  and unusual tree for the medium-sized garden. A most distinguihed tree, recently thought to be extinct in the wild, but now known to grow in at least two small areas in Zhejiang province in Eastern China. Often referred to as a 'living fossil' in that it has remained fundamentally the same over 270 million years. It grows to be a medium-sized  tree with interesting, bright green leaves which give a great golden display in autumn. Prefers a sheltered site out of strong winds, with well-drained, moist soil. They cope well with pollution and city conditions, and are frequently planted as a street tree in the United States of America. Ideal as a container plant. Small 40 - 60 cms plants in 3 L pots.
