Juniperus communic 'Hibernica'
Native juniper, Irish Juniper (Aiteal, Irish)

Compact, vertical and evergreen - a most attractive conifer. This is one of only three conifers native to Ireland, along with Scot's pine and Yew. This much smaller tree is the least common, and could also be described as a vertical, evergreen shrub. It bears short needles and small, edible berries, which have been used to flavour gin for centuries, and the plant also has properties as an insect repellent. As a very slow growing tree, it is ideal for smaller gardens and rockeries where it will reach, after many years, a maximum height of 4 m x 40-50 cms wide. This tree prefers well-drained, shallow soil such as that found in sloping sites, containers or raised beds. Ideal for the low-maintenance smaller garden. 40-45 cms tall plants in a 3 L container.

Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow'
'Blue Arrow' Juniper

Sometimes a garden needs a 'vertical accent' - something which is evergreen, upright and columnar. It can add structure, particularly in the winter months when other plants may have temporarily disappeared. This Juniper, which has silver-blue needle-like foliage, is probably the best blue pencil-shaped conifer available. Grows to approx 2-3 m after 10 years, whilst maintaining its very tight habit - it should stay less than 30 cms wide. Plant in an open position in well-drained soil. Healthy 90-100 cms tall plant in 10 litre container.

Liriodendron tulipfera
Tulip tree

Tulip trees grow to be large trees, somewhat similar to Plane trees but with unmistakable T-shaped leaves. They are called Tulip trees because they produce tulip-like flowers in summer (though this doesn't always happen in this climate!). Their new leaves are very charming, and Tulip trees make an excellent and unusual specimen for anyone interested in something a little rare. Excellent yellow autumn colour. They like fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, and although exceptionally hardy they resent the cold easterly winds which can damage new leaves. 90-120 cms tall plants in 3 litre containers.

Phyllostachys nigra
Black bamboo

These Irish-grown plants are an excellent size, in super condition and for sale at an unbeatable price. An elegant and stylish bamboo with ebony black stems and narrow  green leaves. Its black stems have made it one of the iconic garden plants, and it grows well in this climate, provided it has some shelter from strong winds - particularly eaterly spring winds. Remember to keep bamboos well-watered, particularly if they are recently planted. Once established, they tolerate most soils, but require some moisture and benefit from organic matter such as compost. Remember, bamboo do lose their leaves and can look somewhat shabby in spring / early summer. They can grow to 5 m, though they normally attain 2 - 3 m in this climate. Can make a fine screen. All bamboos on dyg are Irish-grown, making them well adapted to our unique weather conditions. Our plants come as specimens between 200 cms and 300cms in height.  See more options for screens and hedges...   Large: 20 litre; Extra large: 35 litre.
